I just answered two unrelated points in a comment to the same person, less I think because I wanted to jokingly claim the five pounds (though I didn't use the rec.arts.sf.fandom standard-borrowed-from-UK-press formulation) than because it let me use "mores and metaphors" as a comment title.

The new dim sum place in Flushing that has replaced KB Garden (after a multi-month renovation that produced almost no visible change besides a rearranged entrance and the removal of a handrail in the middle of the entry stairway) is quite good, and still has jar leung. They now offer a wide variety of teas, but there was a communications error somewhere: I asked for oolong, and we were brought one pot of their default jasmine tea, and one pot of chrysanthemum, which I'd thought they didn't have. P and I drank that--she is off caffeine. We tried again for oolong later and were disappointed in it. Will try their ti kuan yin next time, I think.

Addendum: Particularly nice things included the roast pork in puff pastry (a variant on the standard baked roast pork bun), a multi-thing dumpling, with bits of shrimp, scallop, mushroom, and other veggies in each dumpling, and the water chestnut cakes, another thing most dim sum restaurants don't seem to have. The people who tried them also thought the beef in soft noodles was better than average. On a previous visit, Moshe had been unimpressed with the clams in black bean sauce, so we didn't get that. I didn't like the scallop dumplings. The congee was so-so: lots of ginger, good basic porridge, and the boiled peanuts worked well, but the chicken wasn't very good as chicken goes.

We then went over to Moshe's for the usual hanging out, and I left early, catching a ride with [livejournal.com profile] womzilla because I thought I might be feeling unwell, based on two consecutive cups of tea (different teas) tasting funny, but after I'd called [livejournal.com profile] cattitude to let him know I was coming home, Moshe told me his tea also tasted funny, so we suspect it was either something weird in the dishwashing, or that I used tapwater instead of filtered, but I'm fairly sure I've made tea using his tapwater before. (It's basic New York water, but I gather he doesn't quite trust the pipes in the house, which are decades old.) Still, that got me home early enough for Scrabble and other good things, and meant Womzilla and Cattitude talked for a few minutes when Womzilla dropped me off.
