I'd discussed going to Shakespeare in the Park with my mother and brother (both of whom are in town for visits), but decided it was too hot to be a good idea for me to (have to) be outside for that long.

So Mark suggested that they come visit me, in my nice air-conditioned bedroom.

They were here for a couple of hours, and we talked about family stuff and (lack of) job stuff and my tattoos--apparently all my relatives still find it surprising and even weird that I have them--and jewelry and other valuable/inheritable objects, and about eagles and Inwood Hill Park and changes to the block Mark and I grew up on. I handed Mom a gold bracelet I inherited from her mother: even if I wore gold, or bracelets, this one is too small for me. So it will be worn, and in a few decades it will return to me, that much more of an heirloom for having been hers as well as Grandma's.

When they were ready to leave, I walked out with them down to the water, and pointed out the box the eagles are living in, then decided it was cool enough to walk a little further. We stopped near the edge of the park so Mom and Mark could take some photos, so she'll have some of me with this haircut. Then I came home, wondering if I'd pushed things too much; I've been bouncing between the living room, for the computer, and the bedroom, where I have been assuring Artemis she's a good cat and dipping into Michael Swanwick's Moon Dogs.

Somewhere in there, Mark and I seem to have found a way to talk again. This is good.
