For complex reasons, Andy and I decided to postpone Valentine's Day until yesterday. (Why not--if Malaysians can celebrate Ash Wednesday on Friday, we can celebrate the 14th on the 17th.)

Andy got a box of nice chocolates. Not that we needed more chocolate (even aside from the cache of Maya Gold that I found hiding in an anonymous plastic bag this morning), but I said that if we were going to actually do Valentine's Day, which we often don't, I wanted chocolates.

Mostly, though, we just spent the day together. A long walk in the hills, spotting periwinkles and enjoying the climb and the company and such blue sky and sunshine as were there. Andy pointed out that walking with me is one of his favorite games. Mine, too.

A nice dinner at a French bistro near Union Square. The carrot and ginger soup with chive oil was an altogether superior comestible.

Not newness, but continuity. It's a good place to be, comfortable and sometimes joyful. ("rare, welcome, unsought, like joy.")
