Today's mail included the delightful notice that I'm being denied unemployment benefits because their records show that I received no wages in the last year.
Now, I know I received wages: I spent most of them. I'm just not sure where the mistake was made, or how to rectify it.
I'm not the most organized person in the world. Some of the relevant pay-stubs (I had direct deposit, so there were no actual checks) may still be in my desk at the old job. Not all: I've been digging through paper here, and found quite a few, including the last one, showing my total wages for the year as well as what I earned in that half-month. And I have my 2000 W-2 and income tax forms, which ought to prove something. But is it enough?
More to the point, why do I have to do this?
They were capable of paying me on schedule. They gave me a slip of paper, labeled "record of employment," allegedly for this very purpose.
So I have a call in to personnel, explaining what happened and asking her to call ASAP--but I believe Monday is a holiday, so I won't hear back until Tuesday the earliest. And I'm thinking dark thoughts, of whether this is a simple error or some complex corner-cutting that is now biting me.
And it's Saturday afternoon, not the ideal time to call the nice man at the Dept. of Labor and ask him what proof of employment they'll need at the hearing.
grumble, grumble, bitch, moan.
