For my birthday this year, I donated a bunch of money to groups that feel like they need it right now: the ACLU, Planned Parenthood, the Southern Poverty Law Center, and Lyon-Martin Health Services.
My mother called to wish me a happy birthday after I'd made the first donation, and was pleased when I told her that part of the money she'd sent as a birthday gift had gone there.
I also walked with Cattitude in the morning, got hot chocolate for second breakfast, and treated myself to a lunch that was mostly cucumbers, with some smoked salmon belly (both of those from the farmers' market) and a bit of lettuce from my front garden, picked an hour before I ate it. This felt like a treat mostly from the angle of having decided that I wanted lunch to be basically cucumbers, before remembering I had the salmon.
I had a very nice dinner with
cattitude and
adrian_turtle. Cattitude made us a cabbage dish I am fond of (I felt like staying in, not going out and spending a bunch of money on a lobster or something—I'll save that for a day when I think I'm more likely to enjoy it), and Adrian baked a chocolate cake.
I figure self-care includes eating well, and that in turn means things I like, and sometimes what I want is cabbage with caraway seeds.

I like your hobbit birthday custom. I think I'll do the same as soon as I get paid.
Mmm, cabbage. I haven't tried it with caraway seeds (I normally use it as a standby in stews or curries or pastas, or costarring with potato in bubble and squeak) but that sounds worth a try.
I went to a local friend's house for our regular weekly dinner and tv, and had spag. bol. with orange and poppyseed cake for dessert.

This was from the people who have been going there with other forms of smoked salmon, and bluefish pate, for a bit. They're selling it as "salmon bacon" and claim it makes a good BLT.
