Tomorrow is my birthday, and in the hobbit tradition, I would like to pick an anti-Trump organization to donate to. I'm thinking either directly political (I will probably increase my donation to the ACLU), or helping people who are likely to be hurt by Republican policies.

I am looking for recommendations, especially of organizations I might not already be aware of.

ETA: Yes, I'm interested in organizations anywhere in the US.

Planned Parenthood was the one that was mentioned all over Twitter, especially since a lot of women will try to get treatment while they still can.

Rosie's Place, rosies.org, a shelter for homeless women. Caveat: I don't know how they treat trans women.

I am getting transition-related and primary health care through the Lyon-Martin clinic in SF. I am not currently insured, and I have been able to transition anyway (and get a Pap scare checked out) because they offer sliding scale services.

It's in CA, so doubtless there are similar orgs serving people who are even more vulnerable, but if you feel like it: http://lyon-martin.org/support-us/ . Planned Parenthood is also a good call.

This morning I donated supplies to Samaritas, an organization that helps resettle refugees in Michigan.

I give to HIAS, a refugee assistance organization that does both direct assistance and political advocacy. Very carefully non-partisan, 501(c)3 advocacy. They seem to be terrifyingly well organized. They used to be the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, but changed the name to just HIAS around the turn of the century. (http://www.hias.org/work/resettling-refugees I feel like I should warn you that their pitch is "today's refugees are just like your ancestors who fled pogroms or the nazis; give us money to help them!")

Trans Lifeline (http://www.translifeline.org/). Calls to crisis and suicide lines are up. A commenter on the PBS NewsHour this evening spoke angrily about how unfair it is to call him a bigot because he doesn't want "a man in the bathroom" with his daughter. The next administration will almost certainly roll back EEOC and federal protections for trans people.

Yeah, they're on my list because of the urgent need.

Right now I think I'm starting with Trans Lifeline, SPLC (again, urgent need due to the emboldening of those who commit hate crimes), Planned Parenthood, and the ACLU. From there I'll extend my reach.

(Also BARCC for the local Boston piece, but I've been a supporter there for years so it's "continue" rather than "start".)
