The garden is doing well

The garden is doing well for values of "well" that include "I don't actually know when to harvest the lettuce," because "before it bolts," while valid, isn't all that useful. Some of the lettuces are growing much faster than others; if I plant lettuce next year I think it all goes in the side bed. I may need to remove more of the milkweed so the lettuce and herbs can have enough sunlight, but we have a lot of milkweed. We haven't spotted any monarch caterpillars yet, though.

There are a lot of cornflowers in front of the house, a very cheerful blue color.

The most recent surprise, and possibly the last, was a few more irises, tucked in among the roses on the back fence. The locust tree in our yard is apparently too young to flower, alas.

There are a few flowers on the tomato plants, and 42itous's peas are doing very well indeed. The cucumbers also look healthy, but I know less about what to look for.

If I wanted fresh thyme, I could probably pluck some now; I'm less sure about the chives and dill. The basil I put in the planter a couple of days ago seems to be settling in nicely.

Also, the neighborhood seems to be full of rabbits, but they have shown no interest in my garden; both these facts are fine with me.

Yes, you do. I'm going to be away for about a week, visiting Montreal; how does late next week sound? And do you drink tea, coffee, or neither?

I don't really know anything about lettuce, but I've been picking just the biggest leaves from mine, each time I want to make a salad.

I did that with care last night, since I have only a few that are large enough to pick any from yet, and mixed them with some bought greens and a little bit of wood sorrel.

Thanks for mentioning the snap peas here -- we just picked several handfuls of them and ate them right away. I should have given them something to climb... Oh well, too late now.
