I've been doing ice massage on the base of my left thumb, as recommended by the PT. I seem to have gotten the knack of doing enough to be usefully intense, and not so much or pressing so hard that the area feels painfully hot afterward.
The sole of my right foot, which has been going through cycles of rough/torn skin, bandage and try to stay off it, heal, itch horribly, wind up scratching or picking at it, tear, repeat, seems to finally be healing for real. (I hope, I hope.) Apparently my relatively new sneakers are better for my feet than any of the New Balance shoes, even though (or because?) they are narrower, in a way that is snug at best and annoyingly tight at the end of the day or by the end of a plane flight. (My sandals, which I had also been using in lieu of slippers, seemed to be tearing the side of the foot, so I have put them away in the closet where I won't grab them by accident. Which means I am wearing my nice snug slippers even on hot days: I anticipate chunks of time whe I am wearing warm fuzzy slippers, eyeglasses, and nothing else, because I'm not supposed to go barefoot if I can avoid it.) If things are still going well when I'm back in Washington, I will probably be going shoe shopping, maybe at an actual shoe store (these running shoes are from a sporting goods store).
I have also started using some heel balm that Adrian picked up this morning, which seems more useful than other lotions.
