I started my computer up this morning, and the Mac built-in email client told me that my mailbox index had been damaged, please close and restart to rebuild it. It's now estimating another 58 minutes for this process.

The thing is, this is the second time it's done this, and the first was only a couple of months ago. I just hope it rebuilds a little more smoothly this time.

A few weeks ago, in a more general discussion, someone recommended the MailMate app. Has anyone here used that? Or have other suggestions for a mail app for MacOSX?

I want to be able to download messages from my ISP and gmail, while leaving copies on the servers for a little while (so I can keep an eye on things if I'm traveling—the message I downloaded on Tuesday in Seattle might be something I want to see from someone else's machine on Friday) and sort things into different mailboxes and folders, both automatically by matching attributes and by hand. And probably several other things.

Basically, I want Eudora back.

ETA: It seems to have rebuilt smoothly this time, but even smooth recovery takes 90 minutes.

Basically, I want Eudora back.

Oh yes, I know that feeling.

Loncon broke Mail for me*, and I ended up with Thunderbird. It's not perfect, but it's a lot better than when I tried it out post-Eudora. I recommend adding the 'correct identity' extension if you use more than one account (it's not perfect, but at least changes the account to the correct one when you're replying to messages). If you have server-side filtering, you also need to individually change the settings on each folder to make it sync with the server automatically.

* Death of emails....

We're all reasonably tech competent people who have been working with computers for decades, and yet we all want Eudora back. Why is it that this one set of functions that worked so well hasn't been improved upon? I don't know anyone who misses more than a single feature from say WordPerfect for DOS or early MS Word. Why can't we have nice mail-managing things? I ask you.

Signed, will be looking for a new solution once I acquire a new computer.

I started using Postbox after Eudora stopped working (it was still limping along but needed a lot of help until eventually I looked at it and went 'I am putting up with *how much* to stop Eudora from falling over?').

Well, first I used Mail, which told me it was using POP to download mail locally, downloaded thousands and thousands of messages, and when I deleted them, it turned out it had sneaked into IMAP mode and deleted mails from the server. Some of them were messages I really, really REALLY wanted to keep (and had a local copy of, in Eudora).

After that I looked around, tried Airmail, which I found unreliable, and ended up with Postbox, which I've found reliable, mostly bug-free (and if so, the bugs are minor niggles). It imports Eudora/Thunderbird mailboxes without hassle and has a useful interface. Wholly recommended.

I am keen to get a good answer to this, because there's nothing out there I know of that's as good as Eudora.
