Something
johnpalmer wrote reminded me of an exercise/stretch I hadn't thought of since I stopped going to the actual gym.
Basically, John mentioned the psoas muscle, and my train of thought was something like "psoas, I had an exercise for that, can I remember it?…I do it lying on the mat… foam roller" and then it came back to me.
I lie flat on the floor, with a foam roller or suitable soft rubber object (my trainer had an odd assortment of somewhat squishable balls) under the small of my back, fold both legs loosely against my chest, then extend one leg to the ceiling and very slowly lower it until my heel touches the floor, ideally without the foam roller moving at all, and hold the position. Then repeat with the other leg.
Back in New York, I was doing three with each leg as part of my regular at-the-gym routine. And then hadn't touched it for at least 18 months. So I just did one with each leg, and didn't hold the position for more than a moment: but I am pleased and a little surprised that I was able to get all the way to the ground, smoothly, after not having done this in so long. It took a lot of weeks of slow, sometimes painful work to get to the point of being able to keep the leg straight and the movement smooth all the way to the ground, when I first started doing those.
