I picked [livejournal.com profile] julian_tiger up from the vet at about 5 this afternoon. He is still thin and moving more cautiously than we would like, and they sent us home with several medications, as well as discharge instructions and a note to make an appointment for next week.

He is still on an antibiotic and an appetite-stimulant, and they have added an antacid and a phosphorus binder. We're supposed to give him those two every twelve hours, I don't know for how long. The phosphorus binder is a liquid, to either squirt over his food or into his mouth.

They also recommended switching him to a canned version of the special kidney diet; he is willing to eat it, so we will probably go with that. (When we first adopted Julian, he was disdainful of canned food and dove right into kibble.) Also, to encourage him to eat the food-with-medicine, they recommend feeding him on a schedule, rather than leaving food out. The tentative plan is half a can every twelve hours, with medicine; maybe some kibble around lunchtime; and continue to give him bits of whatever for treats, emphasizing low-fat options like blueberries and roasted peppers.

I think this means we are going to have to find a reliable professional cat-sitter before the next time we're both traveling; "come over twice a day, and give him subcutaneous fluids every other day," would be a lot to ask of a friend doing it as a favor.
