I increased the weight on the bench press by a whole five pounds, to fifty! Woo hoo! I won't have to hunt for the little 2.5-pound plates, I can just put one 25-pounder on each side. So I did three sets of 12 reps on that.
I started, as usual, with the hip adduction (100 pounds) and abduction (90), alternating machines. Three sets of 15 on each. Cardio, 24 minutes at level 8, heart rate mostly up in happy numbers, 140-153. I'd set the machine for 33 minutes, but ran out of newspaper at 20.
Then into the weight room, for the bench press. From there, seated leg curl, 60 pounds, three sets of 15. Adjustable row, 90 pounds, three sets of 15. Over to the mat: crunches, arches, a second set of crunches, then my lower back complained so I stopped. (15 per set.) Triceps pulldown, bar handle, 80 pounds, one set of 15. That was a strain, so I did the second set at 70 pounds (15 reps). Rope handle, 50 pounds was stenuous, so after four reps I took it down to 40, and did 15 at that weight.
I've been doing the seated leg extension, one leg at a time--Andy's trainer says this is good for the muscles around the knees. This time, I set it to 15 pounds, did one set of 12 on each leg, went back to the left leg for the second set, and yeowch! Switched legs, and my right knee wasn't any better than the left had been, so I stopped after about four reps.
Just because, I rounded things out with a chest press machine. Guessing wildly--it's been ages since I did this, and they've gotten rid of the machine I'd been using--I set it to 30 pounds, and did two sets of 12. And that was quite enough.
I didn't even get out of the house until close to 3--on a day when the gym was closing at 6 because of the holiday. But I got there in time, and found lots of other people there. It's usually not crowded on holiday weekends--I can see why they reduce hours and cancel classes. Today, it seemed as though lots of people had decided that this wasn't really the time for that barbecue or beach trip, and maybe some hotel guests decided to take a break from running around in the rain.
I stopped at Fairway on the way home, so we have decent garlic, and PG Tips tea, again. Also blueberries--the plums looked sad and overpriced. I'll have to look elsewhere, since I now have my mother's plum cake recipe, which turns out to be based on her mother's yellow cake.
