The fifth sentence on page 52 of the book closest to me:
On the borders, speakers of Spanish and Italian had never bothered to learn French because their own languages were easily understood by their neighbors.
(The meme as written says not to identify the book, so I'm not, though some people are identifying theirs. I will note only that I waited until I had a paper book closer to hand than the kindle and iPod, rather than try to decide which of the several books on the same ebook reader is "closest.")
