Apple NY543 (tentative)

This was labeled as being descended from and similar to Gala; I like Galas so decided to give it a try. So we bought two, along with some Paula Reds and, at the other end of the block, some macouns.

The one I just bit into was bland and not at all juicy. I expected that I might like these and cattitude probably wouldn't. If we hadn't just tried and been disappointed by one of this year's macouns, I would probably give up on this variety. As is, I'm thinking it's just not a good year for apples: it's been a very weird growing season, warm early and then an odd pattern of rain and sunshine. So I may try this again next year, if they turn up again.

NY543 are smaller and flatter than a Gala, sort of Macintosh-shaped (the equatorial diameter is noticeably greater than the height), and the skin is part red and part yellow. (If the sign mentioned another ancestor, I don't remember it.)

This is a big huge humongous apple year here. Maybe peaches as well: my information on those is from our one small badly placed tree, and from market prices. Our apples and small and tasty-tart and good for cooking, but need trimming: Chun Woo doesn't like them. I think we'll get some of the peaches this year rather than the squirrels nabbing the lot.

The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum says it has been a very bad year for apples here. That's a long way from you, but weird weather is clearly a factor.

We've had a bit of drought in Washington State and the Gala and Fuji are suffering.

Bad year for Connecticut apples as well. And my brother in the Catskills says his orchards have not been doing well. Such a shame.
