Apple: "Keepsake"

I'm guessing these were named "Keepsake" in part because they store well, given that they were at the Greenmarket the second Saturday in January. It's a small red apple, and we bought one to try along with a half-dozen Macouns that we knew we'd like.

It's tart, crisp, and somewhat juicy, but has little flavor other than being a bit tart. Edible, but I don't think I'll bother getting it again. (Posting this mostly for my own reference.)

Do you have a favorite eating apple?

Not a single favorite, because it depends partly on the year—it seems that different apples respond particularly well to different weather. But I'm fond of Gala (which cattitude finds too sweet), Macouns (which have been particularly good this year), Esopus Spitzenberg most years (during the 2-3 weeks they're available), and Macintosh (reliably good almost every year). Tydemans can be nice, but are more variable.

I like a good Gala myself. I eat a lot of Fuji because we're flooded with them from Washington, but we try to buy local when we can. Wisconsin is now growing Honeycrisps, and while I like them sometimes, they are super duper sweet.

One of the nice things about living in New York is that we get plenty of local apples, though there will be some from Washington, Chile, or New Zealand if I go to the supermarket instead of the farmers' market.

I got something called a Kiku from Whole Paycheck a couple weeks ago - v good, in the realm of a Gala, so you might like them. (Also lady apples, which are amazing but don't store for a damn.)
