Fascinating story about Klingon in Japan. In my day (I spent 8 months there c. 1951) Klingon wasn't yet known, and older people's second (European) language tended to be French (which I knew a bit better than Japanese, then... which isn't saying much), while younger people were trying for English. And older people understood my Japanese pretty well as long as they weren't looking at me and thinking that, being a _hakujin_, I couldn't possibly be speaking it reasonably-comprehensibly. One of these days I might (& hope to) develop a better understanding of the idea of Communication.
