It was fun exercising more-or-less together (she did a lot more cardio than I did, and there were chunks of time that we were in very different areas), and I enjoyed showing her some of the things Emilie has been teaching me.
Most of the machines were different from those I'm used to, so the numbers aren't directly commensurate, but I'm sort of used to that.
Cardio, 10 minutes, top heart rate 138
Chest press, 50 pounds, 15; 55 pounds, 11
Hip adduction, 90 pounds, 15, 12; hip abduction, 75 pounds, 12,70 pounds, 1 (that's what the notes here say)
[I tried the leg press, 130 pounds, but after 2 it was clear this was a bad idea; either different hardware, or too soon after doing two sets with Emilie on Thursday]
Biceps curl sitting on ball, 10 pounds each hand, 2 sets of 20
Balance ~fly, 5/25 pounds, 15 with each foot forward, 7 each
Wrist curl, 30 pounds, 2 sets of 15
Here's where I started showing Adrian things:
Rolled out IT band, 7 or so on each side (she reminded me about that, because she was curious about how I do it). This gym has only smaller foam rollers than I'm used to, which may have made a different on some things, it's hard to be sure.
1/2 roller, tried to balance but never really got steady (some days are better than others)
Balancing on the foam roller, including with both arms up in the air at once
Hamstring bridge, 4
Crunches, 27
Stretches (using the usual machine, but this one has instructions to hold each stretch for between 10 and 30 seconds, which is much more difficult than 5-8 times for a few seconds each, which is what the one at my gym says)
Lunges, 2 with each leg forward (check form with Emilie)
Squats, a few, ditto
Tree, 5 sets of {3 on each foot}
Usually I do the stretches last, but Adrian was using the device after me, and standing around doing nothing isn't very interesting
And then we soaked in the hot tub, which was very pleasant.
If I was in the Boston area and looking for a gym, I might well wind up with Healthworks. I don't know how good their trainers are—and most of the time that doesn't matter to me, but right now I'm working with one—but it's encouraging that they have a wall display listing each trainer's specialties and areas of interest (such as working with new exercisers; balance and Pilates; and "clinical populations")
After the gym, we got some tea, then went down to Trader Joe's for an assortment of useful things like maple syrup, basil, and chicken sausages. Dinner was pasta in a tomato sauce (hence the basil and sausages) and a cold beet soup. Conclusion: plausible, but would have been better with more flavorful beets.
(By the way, if you're keeping track, I went to the gym Thursday, for a session with Emilie, but just put the notes on my computer, not here.)
