Is anyone familiar, for good or ill, with a company called Schmap? They want to use one of my Flickr photos in a guide to New York. They offer no payment, but in other regards this looks plausible, and I'm not trying to do photography professionally (though I have earned money in the past, for the use of something less common than a picture of a butterfly). The request to use the image led me to this page, which has the photo and the text of the offered agreement: http://www.schmap.com/app/shortlist.do;jsessionid=CC12326570C65EEDD9BC4177BE220C45

FWIW, I gave them permission to use one of mine in their Paris guide. I heard about them from another flistie, who's let them use some of hers.

Oh yes, they're legit. But if you don't especially want to give away your work for any reason you won't miss out on lots of lucrative work resulting from people seeing your images in Schmap.

I let them use a photo of mine. I wish I hadn't. I feel like this "outreach" to photographers is a clever marketing scam.

My husband and I both have photos on the St. Louis Schmap

They're in the Missouri Botanical Garden section. I can't see that it does any harm.

I allowed them to use a few of mine on their page for Sheffield, England. They show a smallish thumbnail on their page, attributed and linked to the Flickr photo page; it hasn't driven a huge number of clicks my way (if any), let alone led on to anything more, but it seemed fairly harmless.

I said yes

they have one of my sydney pix. they asked again for a later photo, that didn't seem at all relevant to a travel guide, since it was a photo of someone else's painting. I said no that time since it was primarily another artist's work being shown. (the source image for this icon)

Re: I said yes

Too bad that's a painting -- I have a collection of alien sealife in lampwork and that looks like it would fit!
