Email Scam Alert
There seems to be a new email scam targeting LiveJournal users, effectively asking them for their login information by visiting a URL that almost matches "livejournal.com". If you receive this email or any others bearing a similar resemblence, please disregard it entirely, and certainly do not click on the link provided. We do not delete accounts for simple inactivity.


Dear LiveJournal user,

We have recently noticed that you haven't updated your LiveJournal in
awhile. If you would like to keep your LiveJournal account, you must sign in
within the next 24 hours.


You may sign in at: { link removed }

Failure to sign in within the next 24 hours will result in account
termination.

If at all possible, please spread the word about ignoring this scam to other users that may not see this news post.

Common scam, but why would someone want someone else's LiveJournal login information? Is there someting you can do with it that I'm not thinking of?

Possibly flooding an ICQ (administrative?) account with bogus pages, which seems to be the effect of clicking on the particular bunny the spam wants you to click on. A working copy of the link was eventually posted in a comment to the news entry.

Another user posted a comment which suggested putting in a lot of bogus combinations of username and password, which rather made my paranoia twitch.

Best guess is that they're counting on people using the same password for lots of things. If you have the email address and password, you may well have access to their ISP account, maybe an eBay account--the people who fall for this are likely to be the ones who use the same password for everything.
