Just heard from Jennifer, the recruiter I'd been talking to about that proofreading job:

Sorry for the delay.
While the client was very intrigued, they apparently were able to uncover internal resources to fill this temp need.
If I get anything else I can refer to you, I will certainly be calling.
Keep in touch and keep checking our website!

I sent back a thank-you for informing me, but I really wish I'd known sooner.

Shame. Sympathies on not getting the job, and general vicarious annoyance about them being unhelpful about telling you so. Gh. I hope your luck improves soon.

Grrr. I hope the client is horribly embarrassed by their un-proofread text. In public. Loudly.

How frustrating for you.

BTW, thanks for your supportive comments. I'm hanging on, but it's hard.

You might have been lucky to get any reply back. Through the last two years it seems HR people pretty much ignore responding - though I understand (in Seattle at least) a lot of times it's due to the huge responses they get for every one job open.

Good luck.
