I have a packet of sour cream and onion–flavored crickets.

No, I didn't seek this out. I was walking from the subway to work this morning, and along with the usual people hawking the free newspapers, there were some handing out packets, without saying anything. I asked one of them what he was giving out, and he handed me a small box (like the ones that Chicklets gum comes in) and a plastic card. The box contained the aforementioned crickets, which I may not bother trying, since I don't like sour cream and onion potato chips (teriyaki I'd try); the card has a code for free download of a television program that the people with the crickets are promoting. I spent a little while wondering how many places other than the exits to Penn Station--and in how many cities--they were doing this promotion. All you need is public sidewalks with plenty of pedestrian traffic.

That SCREAMS out "Interfilk auction item!"

If the packet falls behind a dresser and -- remains uneaten by certain creatures who are very stripey -- you could probably get a couple of bucks for such an item on eBay in a few years.

What an odd thing to hand out. It certainly stands out.

Russ says, "Junk food for snakes?"

I'm with Dave. Donate it to the Interfilk auction. It's just weird enough that someone will have to buy it!

It appears to be a regular snack item (http://www.google.com/search?q=sour+cream+and+onion+crickets&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a). I've had crickets -- fried, not roasted -- and not flavored. They were pretty good. And Spirit is particularly fond of raw crickets, but leaves their legs in the foyer.

Cricket crickets?

Sour cream and onion cricket crickets?

My uncle encountered tempura crickets on Hawaii before the war, but these make it sound as though I ought to be going to New York more.
