redbird: full bookshelves and table in a library (books)
([personal profile] redbird Dec. 1st, 2007 06:56 pm)
The problem with my library book is page 37.

It's not there.

This is a paperback. When the clerk brought it to the front desk, I could see that the book wasn't in great condition. What I couldn't see was that there's at least one page missing. I discovered that when I got to the end of page 36, and the material on the next page wasn't continuous. It's not continuous because it's page 39.

Through the wonders of the modern age, I found that [livejournal.com profile] cattitude's branch library owns a copy of this book, which was listed as on the shelves as of yesterday afternoon, so I asked him to pick it up for me. Once he has done so, or in a few days regardless, I will return this one.

Fortunately, I have two, no three, other library books I haven't started.

ETA: Cattitude is home, with another copy of the book.

You may want to search for the book in Amazon or Google Books, see if either has previews (Amazon "search inside"), and read the page that way.

I got a copy of Leigh Brackett's A Tiger Walks Among Us from a library sale, but it was missing the last page. Thank goodness there was a movie.

Well, make sure you tell the library when you take it back!

The library will probably discard it. It's possible to replace missing pages with photocopies taken from other copies, and this is often done when hardcovers in the permanent collection are mutilated, but public library paperbacks aren't intended to be kept permanently anyway, and points like this is when they go.
