redbird: a male cardinal in flight (birding)
([personal profile] redbird May. 23rd, 2007 09:18 pm)
Some birding neighbors showed us an oriole nest yesterday evening: it's a woven spheroid attached to the very end of a tree branch, in one of the plane trees near the inlet. Ted said he'd spent hours watching the parents fly in and out to feed the young, and taken lots of pictures. (He has offered to email me a photo or two, in fact.) We stood around with him, his partner (I cannot remember her name), and their dog for a while, talking and watching, but saw nothing.

This morning, [livejournal.com profile] cattitude and I got out of the house early enough to walk by the oriole nest, and after a minute or two, an oriole showed up with a worm in her beak. She landed on the branch, perched a moment, then flew into the nest. As described, the nest shook vigorously while she was in there (it waves in the wind as well). Then she came out, sat on the branch, sang briefly, and flew off again, presumably in search of another worm.
