I started Armageddon Rag in the early evening of December 31st the year it came out, got hooked, went out with friends for New Year's Eve, then came home and put on The Doors and sat up all night till I'd finished it, because it didn't seem right to sleep till it was done.
it isn't the best book I have ever read, but it definitely pulled out a much more visceral response from my memories of that time, and knowledge gained by reading of it afterwards, than most books ever manage to do.
I could actually hear the performances of "What Rough Beast" and the other Nazgul songs in my head, musical arrangements and all.
George R. R. Martin was a guest at Wiscon 12, and was very generous with his time, often sitting at a round table just outside one of the programming rooms chatting with waves of fans who came and went between programming items. This was when Beauty and the Beast was still on, so he had both literary and media fans hanging out with him.
