I knew that half. What took longer is: I can eat anything I want to. That doesn't just mean a second slice of chocolate cake: nobody is going to point and stare at me because I want to eat something they think is icky, or ostracize me because this time I want seconds on the vegetables and therefore decline dessert. They may not eat it themselves; in extreme cases they may refuse to be at the same table while I'm eating it (though okra doesn't have the sort of strong odors likely to produce that); but I have the right to say no, or yes, to sweets and savories, to the things that are frequently called self-indulgent and the ones that have entirely different reputations.
