I have filled out my TAFF ballot, written Suzle a check, and put it all in an envelope. For hard to identify reasons, this has me feeling a little better about talking about the future of fandom on a Wiscon panel next weekend.
I remember that panel (the one at Interaction, that is). I'm trying to imagine how Wiscon would do a feminist version of the same thing. We have lots of young people, which is one of the nice things about Wiscon, really. They're not as young as most of the YAFA kids, and more likely to be at the con on their own. It might not have quite the same energy level, but it still could be an exciting panel.
This was the one Zorinth and his friends invaded with water pistols, twice, and then again a third time because it was so much fun but, unfortunately, to everyone's great surprise, after that panel had ended and another one started.
Indeed. The blurb for the panel was very arch, and had the typical sort of nurturing/despairing text that such panels are prone to, but finished up with the words "we ask the question 'Where are the new fans going to come from?' "
Knowing full well, of course, that the answer was 'through that door, armed with weapons to disrupt the old order.'
Oddly, despite the fact that the ONLY PURPOSE OF THE PANEL was to provide a framing device for the YAFA invasion, some of the audience didn't believe it when the panellists abandoned the panel, and carried on trying to discuss the alleged theme.

I bet the one at Wiscon isn't so dramatic!
