Airfares. Feh.

So of course the attractive round trip fare from LaGuardia to Madison for Wiscon would require me to be on a 6:30 a.m. flight Monday morning, which is just not going to happen. (They'll match that with any number of different flights to Madison on Thursday, but that doesn't actually help.) For added annoyance, Northwest's Web site--which I'd prefer to book with directly rather than Travelocity--doesn't even seem prepared to admit they have any other flights out of Madison that day, though Travelocity and Orbitz both show them. Time to look at united.com and see what United is willing to offer. (O'Hare. Extremely modified rapture.)

I am just going to remind myself that I'm spending peanuts on all those trips to Boston, not that that actually makes this cheaper, but it may be somewhat reassuring. And Wiscon is almost certainly my only con this year.

Just because I like to play with travel websites, I played a bit.

Best I can do is a $344 fare (as compared with $268 for the 6:30 a.m. flight), with a two-hour layover in Chicago. That probably isn't at all helpful (especially since the first leg routes through St. Louis), but if it might be, here's the details:

Also, I found a fare on American that I can't provide a link to that looks like it's $278 -- also going through St. Louis on one leg, but without the long layover.

A bunch of airlines are having fare sales right now, through tomorrow (te 4th). Unfortunately, American's site says that they're sold out of the <$200 fare (RT to MSN) except on the 23rd and the 31st. It might be worth a phone call, or checking later, to see if spaces open on the 24th and 30th (I was guessing at the dates).

United's fare isn't that much more than Northwest's, and I've heard far fewer horror stories about United.
