I appear to have misinterpreted something in the Unemployment Insurance questionnaire. It asked whether I had any "business or activity" that produces, or may produce, income. I picked "yes" because I have these bits of freelance proofreading and such.

So now I have a long questionnaire about my non-existent business, including whether it's incorporated and what salary I made from it. I'm going to call tomorrow and ask for advice, and then fax it back with as clear an explanation as I can that I don't have a business in that sense, with separate facilities or employees or a salary, I do small amounts of freelance editorial work, for which I get small checks and eventually 1099 forms.

And I am trying not to worry that they will decide not to give me benefits.

:( I wish they'd write questions for literal interpretation.

Thumbs clenched in empathy.

Darn blast it! Your reading of the question makes perfect logical sense. I suspect you'll be fine, and it's the bureaucrats who have mis-understood their own form. Good luck!

Well, technicaly, I think they view that as running a small buisness with a sole trader.
