This seems reasonable to me, and is probably what I would have assumed. Did something come up that made you feel the need to mention it specifically? Or were you just thinking about it?
(As ever, ignore me blithely if I ask a question you don't feel like answering. For me, a concommittant of the kind of desire to understand that you describe is that I not only speculate at times, I also just go and ask. And sometimes people prefer not to answer. Which makes perfect sense to me.)
