The last time I had bronchitis, I wasn't careful, and it turned into pneumonia.
Of course, the doctor who diagnosed the pneumonia also told me I could go back to the gym that afternoon, if I was so minded. I didn't. (He wasn't my regular GP, but her partner--they're in the Bronx office on different schedules, and sometimes seeing a doctor right away is more important than seeing the doctor I prefer.)
