There was an egret fishing in the inlet this morning. Specifically, a male egret, with breeding plumage (which is how I know he was male). I watched him for a while, in the light fog. A freight train passed behind, across the river, the herring gulls did what herring gulls do, some geese called nearby, and eventually I decided to leave, in the hopes that he'd decide this would be a good place to nest this year.

On the way in, I passed a neighbor who said something about it being Spring, so I told her about the egret. She was pleased.
