The thing about online journals is that I get used to them. Not so much the act of writing--I'm writing less than I usually do, here or anywhere--but reading. I've gotten used to being up to date on certain people's lives.
So when people stop posting, there's an odd gap. If it's someone I know only from their journal, the absence is minor--it's like finishing a story, and not knowing if there will be another. (But I'm glad to have signed up to Patrick's notify list before he stopped journaling, because he sends occasional life updates even now.)
But I find myself wondering how Richard is doing, because after posting daily for quite a while, he seems to have taken a sudden hiatus. Probably the move and new job, but who knows?
Without this, I'd see him once a year, maybe, and get any major news from the grapevine. But I'd gotten used to the little updates, as he moved into the new place, went back and forth between cities, had lunch with coworkers, all that.
Memo to self: do not start watching soap operas.
