I spent a chunk of this afternoon exchanging emails with someone who was looking for proofreaders, and then doing a brief proofreading test she sent me, and faxing it back (which meant going to the nearby stationery store to use their fax machine). I just heard from her: "your test was great but I hired someone else (he got his test back just after I sent yours.) BUT I am in desperate need of proofreaders and I will almost certainly use your services in the next two months."

So there's probable work there, but not (as I'd hoped) next week.

As a side note, I'm fairly sure that stationers' is a front for something--I've never seen another customer in there. But it's a good, if small, basic place: printer paper and pens, ribbons and copies and faxes, and I hope that, whatever they're covering up, they get to keep using this cover for a good long while, because it's handy to our home, and nice to have something breaking up the string of car repair places on that stretch of Broadway.

Yikes on the "front for something else!"

Maybe the stationers is some backroom loan shark outfit for all the car dealers? Does it have a "room in the back" with a back entrance?

Just kidding.

I was wondering, though...how does one go about finding employment in proofreading? I'm in the Los Angeles area, and would really love to do something like that from home since I've been off work due to a medical condition and walking is still not completely back to normal.

Every now and then I've encountered a store like you describe. Most recently there was a fast food place near where I live that sold fish and chips etc. The food there was so bad I doubt anybody ate there more than once (I certainly didn't) yet it remained open for several years. Indeed once it closed it was only to move to another part of town. Since I can't believe they were surviving on the food they sold (never have you seen a take-away so empty so often) I can only guess it was a cover for 'something'.
