C is for Chutney--and we'll stop there, because that's the entire shopping list at the moment. It was just chutney (used up on chicken sandwiches at lunchtime), but I just made cakelings, and we now have no apples and less than a stick of butter. At the rate we use it these days, that means time to buy more.

Hmm: I buy a bar of butter, and it tends to sit int he fridge door for months, getting used a sliver at a time for tossing vegetables, or if we indulge in croissants or crumpets. But then, baking is one of those things I gave up when I left home and no longer had the 'Mum, what do I do now?' helpline on hand. Besides, my first independent attempts at cakes had a tendency to resemble pancakes.

Chutney: err, yuck. Good fruit/veg spoiled by vinegar. Admittedly, I make spiced or pickled fruit preserves every few years. That's how long it takes for us to get through a few jars. Likewise making tomato or other sauce.

Our shopping list: tortilla wrap, vanilla ice-cream (to go with the blackberry harvest and heatwave), yoghurt, ginger root. No veg until we use up the ones we're harvesting. No meat until we've cleared the freezer drawer to make space for surplus veg harvest...

D is for Duck?

No, I suppose we'd better use up the chicken first.
