Maybe their feet hurt (mine did by the time I got home) or they really really needed a bathroom or a bottle of water.
Or their babysitter was running out, or they had a fight with their companions, or they found out somebody died, or they had another party to go to, or they wanted to go home and have sex, or something else.
I like speculating about people's motives for the things they do that I can't understand right away.
