Yes! It means there are now two countries in the Americas where an inidgenous language is the official language. (The other one is Guarani in Paraguay, where it is co-official with Spanish. Greenland wins the "sole official language" prize, though.)

Three, actually. I mentioned this discussion to cattitude, who said something about Bolivia and the Morales administration.

The current Bolivian constitution recognizes all the languages commonly spoken in the country as official: Spanish, Guarani, Quechua, Aymara, twenty-odd other indigenous languages, and Plautdietsch, the Mennonite dialect of German.

As far as I can tell quickly, official includes that they are used in the public schools.

And since I got this by looking up Bolivia, it may be more than three countries. [edited to elaborate slightly, and for Spanish dialect.]
