redbird: closeup photo of an apricot (apricot)

This one actually seems potentially interesting, so I'm doing it. If you wish to play:

The list is 100 things that a British publication considers to be interesting and/or exotic food that people should at least try once.

1) Copy this list into your blog or journal, including these instructions.
2) Bold all the items you’ve eaten.
2a) Italicize any item you'll never eat again.
2b) Asterisk any items you'd be willing to try but have not yet.
3) Cross out any items that you would never consider eating.
4) Optional extra: Post a comment at the originating site linking to your results.

I've added comments on some of the items, including reasons why or why not.

1. Venison [I think so]
2. *Nettle tea (pending further research)
3. *Huevos rancheros (assuming I regain the ability to eat spice; I'm not sure I've never had these, but there's no clear memory of them)
4. Steak tartare (also cheval tartare)
5. Crocodile
6. Black pudding
(probably won't again, as I disliked the texture)
7. Cheese fondue
8. *Carp (if I was hungry enough)
9. *Borscht (having discovered that I like beets when not pickled, I'd consider borscht. Real soon now)
10. Baba ghanoush
11. Calamari
12. Pho

13. PB&J sandwichTexture issues again, though a different texture.
14. Aloo gobi
15. Hot dog from a street cart
(This is definitely part of my native cuisine and culture.)
16. Epoisses (probably not, but I've been known to surprise myself: this appears to be a weird stinky cheese)
*17. Black truffle
18. Fruit wine made from something other than grapes
19. Steamed pork buns
20. Pistachio ice cream
21. Heirloom tomatoes
22. Fresh wild berries (I have happily gathered and eaten wild blueberries, black and red raspberries, blackberries, and a wild strawberry or two. Some of these were growing in New York City).
23. Foie gras
24. Rice and beans
25. Brawn, or head cheese
(I think so, probably at [livejournal.com profile] papersky's house)
26. Raw Scotch Bonnet pepper
*27. Dulce de leche
28. Oysters (don't care for them raw, thanks, and generally find them overrated; this means [livejournal.com profile] rysmiel and [livejournal.com profile] cattitude are welcome to my share)
29. Baklava
*30. Bagna cauda
31. Wasabi peas
32. Clam chowder in a sourdough bowl
(though I prefer chowder in a ceramic bowl and the sourdough bread separately)
33. Salted lassi (I preferred sweet, when I could drink it)
34.Sauerkraut
35. Root beer float (I might be persuadable, but it seems a waste of good vanilla ice cream)
*36. Cognac with a fat cigar (no cigars for me. Tobacco is evil and smells bad)
37. Clotted cream tea
38. Vodka jelly (translating dialect, those are known over here as jello shots, and are one of the things people drink when they're young and foolish, to get wasted quickly. No thanks.)
39. Gumbo
40. Oxtail
41. Curried goat

42. Whole insects (though I may never again)
43. Phaal Not my style of machismo, thanks.
*44. Goat’s milk
45. Malt whisky from a bottle worth £60/$120 or more I don't like whisky, those who do should keep it.
46. Fugu
47. Chicken tikka masala Does any British publication in 2008 need to urge its readers to try chicken tikka masala?! [OK, it's a blog and possibly not aimed specifically at a British audience, despite the URL.]
48. Eel
49. Krispy Kreme original glazed doughnut (overrated)
50. Sea urchin (another texture I disliked)
51. Prickly pear (okay but unexciting)
*52. Umeboshi (not 100% sure I haven't had this)
53. Abalone
54. Paneer

55. McDonald’s Big Mac Meal(I may have had a big mac, but not the meal. I hope never to eat another McDonald's burger, and certainly not the big mac)
56. Spaetzle
57. Dirty gin martini
58. Beer above 8% ABV
(unless raspberry lambic counts, in which case make that a boldface instead of a strike)
59. Poutine
*60. Carob chips
61. S’mores
*62. Sweetbreads (maybe)
63. Kaolin (People rarely develop pica at my age, even if not getting a varied diet, as I am).
*64. Currywurst (another I might if the ability to handle capsaicins comes back)
65. Durian (if sandwich cookies with durian filling count. Based on them, I will avoid the actual fruit.
66. Frogs’ legs
67. Beignets, churros, elephant ears or funnel cake
(I'm sure I've had churros and funnel cake)
*68. Haggis
69. Fried plantains (sweet, by preference)
*70. Chitterlings, or andouillette
71. Gazpacho (don't like most gazpachos)
72. Caviar and blini
73. Louche absinthe
74. Gjetost, or brunost (another I think I tried at a con)
*75. Roadkill (it would depend on the species and condition: the commonest roadkill eaten in this part of the world is venison, and I have no preference for venison killed by a butcher or a rifle bullet rather than a car)
76. Baijiu (maybe, but I expect I wouldn't like it: I don't like most distilled liquors)
77. Hostess Fruit Pie (if you haven't, you are missing nothing whatsoever)
78. Snails
79. Lapsang souchong

*80. Bellini
81. Tom yum
*82. Eggs Benedict
83. Pocky
*84. Tasting menu at a three-Michelin-star restaurant. (I'd consider this, but it seems unlikely anytime soon)
*85. Kobe beef (as with 84)
*86. Hare (I've had rabbit; not, as far as I know, hare)
87. Goulash
88. Flowers (Nasturtiums, candied violets)
89. Horse
(I should try it cooked sometime)
*90. Criollo chocolate
91. Spam (I might be persuadable, but am in no hurry here)
92. Soft shell crab
*93. Rose harissa
94. Catfish
95. Mole poblano
96. Bagel and lox
(more proof that this list comes from a long way from my home)
*97. Lobster Thermidor
*98. Polenta
99. Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee I don't like coffee.
*100. Snake (an asterisk on this because I don't think I've ever had it)

At times like this, I remember why it's difficult for me to add entirely new foods (as distinct from new preparations) to my lifetime experience: I've already had a lot of the things that are practicable for me (in terms of logistics and budget) and that are at all appealing. Once upon a time, mango was exotic.
