I'm officially a science editor, but the Ohio standard for seventh grade wanders into what I'd call social studies questions. Fortunately, one of my interests is history of technology, so it was no problem writing a new page or so of copy, to replace a perfectly nice list that had nothing to do with what the book needs to cover. Mercator projections and segue to longitude (both for navigation), that leads to clocks, mention GPS systems as another solution to the general problem, and then a bit on suburbs, cars, and some tech that makes cars easier and safer to use. (I didn't actually draw on my long-ago coursework on the subject.)
