The main reason I have the gym membership is that I get to use lots of equipment, that I wouldn't have space for even if we wanted to buy it all separately. And I can try new things, and ask advice from friendly trainers. That money also buys me an air-conditioned location, which was a very good thing this evening. It's been hot and sticky, and today there was an air quality warning, reminding people to avoid strenuous exercise outdoors.
The last couple of days at work, my office has been comfortably cool in the morning, and then very stuffy in the afternoon. By six yesterday, I just wanted to go home and stare at the inside of my eyelids.
Today, I finished a proofreading job at 5:15, and decided it made sense to save the next copyedit and come to it fresh in the morning, so I told my supervisor that, and headed for the gym. I walked fairly slowly to the subway, and waited for traffic lights (including not pushing to cross on the flashing "don't walk" when I got to an intersection at that point in the cycle); the air conditioning when I walked into the hotel where my gym is was a definite pleasure and relief.
It was a good, thorough workout. (Last Friday, I had to cut it short enough I didn't even bother posting.)
