We were walking in the park yesterday morning, and Andy saw a feather on the ground, probably a flicker's. I found another nearby, and we were discussing whether this meant that a predator had caught a flicker, when a boy saw us and asked "Are those leaves?" (Dark gray and white would be very odd leaves.) Andy said they were feathers, and the boy said he'd seen a bluejay nearby. Then he said he'd seen a red jay, and started to describe it. I pointed at my left arm, and asked him "Like this?" Yes, like that. We told him it was a cardinal, and he wandered off.

There are more advantages than I'd realized to have a bit of Peterson's field guide tattooed on my arm.
