I slept very badly last night (for reasons mostly either physical or inexplicable), but got up at 7:30 as planned and went out to canvass for Yes on 3 (transgender rights). We met at a church near Central Square (Cambridge), got a bit of training, and then set out. When we were ready to leave, the organizer asked if anyone had a car. Silence. Then they asked if anyone was willing to pay for a Lyft to get us to our canvassing locations and I volunteered.
My partner and I were sent to Watertown, where we did a lot of walking, rang a lot of doorbells, and talked to a few people. I may have made it more likely that a few people will vote—the two I asked to make/state a voting plan, and maybe some of those who I left flyers for. Canvassing from 11-2 on a workday, we rang a lot of bells that nobody answered. The tally at the end showed that my partner had rung twice as many bells as I had, with the same success rate (so twice as many conversations and voting plans); they're a lot younger and more energetic than I am, and took credit (if that's the word for it) for a lot of unanswered doorbells in apartment buildings.
Then I took the 71 bus to Harvard Square, had a sweet potato and apple sandwich at Flour, and bought two pints of ice cream at Lizzy's to take home.
That was 3.8 miles of walking according to my phone, so at least two in real distance; that's both much-needed exercise and probably enough for the day.
(If I have the energy this afternoon, I will make some GOTV phone calls from home, robably for Yes on 3, or maybe for Florida voting rights, which I'm already set up for. (Various people would also like me to call for a variety of candidates in other states, including Stacey Abrams for governor of Georgia, but I can't do everything. Even with a lot more energy than I have, I can't make more than one phone call at a time.)
