I picked fresh basil from my back yard planter this afternoon, snacked on some of it with cherry tomatoes, and used the rest in pasta sauce for dinner.
I wasn't expecting this, because I bought and planted a small pot of basil in the spring, which withered after a couple of weeks. For a while it looked as though there was nothing in that planter; then some weeds sprouted. I happened to look there this afternoon, while wandering through to check on the morning glory vines, and saw three small but healthy basil plants. Two of them were close to flowering, so I plucked the top of one stem and put it in a bag with the afternoon's cherry tomato harvest.
With luck, there will be some good tomatoes at the farmers' market tomorrow, to go with more of the basil.
Also, I keep seeing rabbits in both the front and back yard, but whatever they're eating, it's not the lettuce I planted last week (or
42itous's hot peppers, but that's no surprise).
