Sunday I finally got to one of the regular local fannish socials, the second Sunday pub meet. I was there for a couple of hours, and had some good conversations: some cheerful discussion of weather and climate with some people I hadn't known before, and I caught up some with Marci Malinowycz and with Jordin and
marykaykare. Then I fell into a good conversation with a woman named Cathy, who remembered me from the old NY rassef socials (though I didn't recognize her) and her partner Ruth; they wound up offering me a ride home, even though they don't live on the East Side. (Cathy used to work near where I now live, which doesn't count as getting to know people who live over here, but she told me what the mostly-empty building across the street used to be.)
There are a couple of get-togethers in the next few days planned around Jim Mowatt's TAFF visit, and I am hoping to get to one of those, but I am better at hoping to get to parties in Seattle than actually doing so; one advantage of the pub meets is that they're in the afternoon, so while the bus trip home may take an hour and a half, I'm not worrying about catching a last bus.
Today's trip was a bit more of an adventure than I had expected. The idea was to drop some more books at the library, then go out to Redmond to Trader Joe's, partly as an excuse to go to Redmond. The library part was straightforward, and then my nice, brief directions completely failed to get me where I wanted to go. Instead, they got me turned around, leading to an indifferent noodle dish for lunch (I set out just late enough to be hungry when I got to the Redmond Transit Ceter) and then further wanderings. But at least I was gathering and eating blackberries along the roadside on my way to figuring out that I was clearly in the wrong place.
At that point I gave up, turned back, and walked until I found a bus stop. Since the schedule said I had a ten-minute wait, I decided to walk back to the transit center instead of waiting where I was (on the assumption that I was heading in that direction); keeping going in a straight line turned out to lead to the not-very-visible Trader Joe's I had been aiming for in the first place. I found the two things I was specifically looking for (TJ's house brand things
adrian_turtle likes, and a few I hadn't been, including some late cherries. Also rather more exercise than I had intended, on a day when my legs were feeling creaky before I even got on the bus to Redmond after my stop at the library. So, that all worked out, but I think next time I want to visit TJ's I will go to the also-not-terribly convenient but closer one in Bellevue, or make it an excuse to go to Seattle and explore a little more.
