I had my first actual physical therapy session for my tennis elbow this morning at 9. (I misguessed how long it would take to get there, and arrived before the office opened; now that I know they open at 9, if this happens again on a cold morning I will wait in the lobby of the subway station.) The therapist did a bunch of ultrasound. Then she gave me some stretches, and did some stretching of the arm for me, some of which hurt a little, but in a familiar "stretching all the way" way, not a "joint pain" way. I did exercises to strengthen the wrist, with 2- and 1-pound dumbbells. (She gave me the choice, and I did some of the exercises happily with the larger weight, and for some wanted the smaller.) She also had me use a "hand bike" cardio machine: it was supposed to be a total of six minutes, three rotating in each direction, but while the forward three minutes was fine, the elbow started to hurt after about 90 seconds backwards, so I stopped. Then she offered me ice for the elbow, and I sat and read with it for a bit, and that was it. Since I don't have a one- or two-pound dumbbell, my only homework is to do my wrist stretches (and there's no specified frequency).
I am seeing the therapist again next Wednesday and Friday, and will try to remember to ask her whether I should buy weights that light (I have a three-pound weight, but that's not appropriate right now), and may see if I can find anything that light at the gym next time I go.
After PT, I went down to the gym; again, I emphasized lower body stuff, but I didn't push myself the way I did on Tuesday. Then I went to Mee Noodle Shop for lunch (it's conveniently near the gym, and it was already 12:30) and got the tofu in black bean sauce, something
xopher introduced me to last fall. Partway through the meal, I looked at my plate and thought "someone looking at this would think I cared about my health" followed by the realization that yes, PT followed by a workout, I do care about my health. What I'm not doing is restricting my diet in ways that connect to that: I eat vegetables because they're good for me and because I like them, and I got brown rice because it seems to go better than white rice with that particular dish. But yes, I do a bunch of stuff for my health, and I'm allowed to take credit for it. I also walked down to 43rd Street after lunch and bought a three-berry pie, because self-denial isn't one of those things.
