I am on borrowed internet in the cafe downstairs (or maybe paid for, since I have bought eggs and stuff). We were supposed to get phone repairs Friday morning, and after saying very nice things to and about the cat, the tech they sent out looked in the basement, said the problem was there, and would need to be fixed back at his office. "An hour," and the DSL would be out for part of that time.

It is now Monday morning. We have had a number of phone calls with the phone company, and promises of "7 tonight...noon Saturday...noon Sunday." Sunday afternoon I got someone who admitted, or maybe explained, that the techs don't do that sort of work on the weekend, and that today, Monday, is a holiday, so the techs won't be there to work on it today either. She had no explanation for why I had been told they would be doing things on Saturday or Sunday, let alone why the automated system had let me make an appointment for someone to come in and look at the inside wiring this morning. Nor why a human I then talked to had confirm it. (Those techs also get the day off.) She did say she would flag this job as priority, so we'd get it earlier tomorrow, and give me credit for the time that line wasn't working.

If, as I suspect, what we will get Tuesday is the DSL back and still no dial tone on the second line, I'm not sure what we'll do. Maybe ask for the DSL to be moved over to our main phone line, cancel this one, and swap out phone for fax on the rare occasions I need to send a fax. It's probably silly to be paying for a second line for faxes given how few I send; if they cannot or will not give us a dial tone so we can do so, it's definitely not worth it.
