My left knee was feeling a bit tender on Thursday, so I put the workout off until Friday. (I'm writing this Saturday morning.) It still wasn't great on Friday, but I had won a free training session and wanted to talk to the manager about that. My gym is having a contest that seems to be designed to be easy to win if you go to the gym regularly--answer fairly simple exercise-related questions right on eight visits (it had been announced as eight during March, but they extended it, which makes sense if the main idea is to hope that if we get one free we will buy some afterwards). And I figured I could do cardio and upper-body exercises.

My knee started hurting significantly more as I walked up the steps from the subway on my way to the gym. Still, I was there, so I figured I would persevere. It was okay except for the steps in the gym (the entrance is on the 15th floor, and almost everything except the pool and one set of locker rooms is down a flight on 14).

I talked to the fitness manager, who asked whether I had any injuries, so I told him about the knee and the rotator cuff, and whether I wanted a male or female trainer. I told him I didn't care as long as the person understood that this is a strength and balance program, not a weight-loss program. He said "Emilie," pointed her out to me, and got my phone number so she can call me when she isn't with a client. I've seen her around, and doing Pilates stuff, and she seems good. (He said she's very good at working with injuries.) I am hoping for a call in the next few days, to arrange something after work on the 19th or 20th.

And then I did some cardio, and such upper-body stuff as didn't seem as though it would incidentally strain the knee (e.g. by using the legs to brace). And then home, with use of an access ramp at one subway station and elevators at another. Most of the system is not handicapped accessible, it's just luck that I use stations that are.
