redbird: closeup of me drinking tea, in a friend's kitchen (Default)

By mid-afternoon, I had a headache and a backache. I blame the former on an excess of chocolate, which was the result of some probably well-meaning coworkers who arranged a "chocolate bake-off." This was manifested as eight or nine different plates of chocolate goodies, including orange chocolate chip cookies, fudge, brownies, a rich chocolate cake, and chocolate crescent rolls (all of which I had some of), plus some chocolate-and-nut spiders, a chocolate kahlua cake, and I don't remember what all else. I was reminded to vote in the bake-off, and then told I should vote for the Kahlua cake because they wanted that baker to win as a going-away present, or something. I voted for the cookies; they can fix their vote without me.

I suspect the back pain had more to do with my having not found a good way to arrange the various reference books I need for the current project at work so I can look at everything and have easy access to the computer (since everything I look up is getting recorded electronically).

So, I didn't go to the gym; I didn't go to [livejournal.com profile] bearsir's performance tonight; I didn't even go to Sahadi to restock on dried fruit and Ceylon breakfast tea. I came directly home instead. Well, almost directly--once in Inwood Hill Park, I decided to go visit the ducks. From the shoreline, I could see some kind of boat or barge sitting near the entrance to our inlet, in a position where it wasn't clear whether it had run aground or was riding at anchor. I walked out to the edge of the little peninsula, and still couldn't tell: the tide was most of the way out, and without knowing how much water it draws, there's no way for me to tell. I also couldn't make sense of its configuration: it had a vaguely industrial look, but in the way that a model built by someone trying to look industrial would, rather than as though it had a specific purpose.
