redbird: closeup of me drinking tea, in a friend's kitchen (Default)

I got to sleep in, all the way until almost nine o'clock. It took a bit of doing, of looking at the clock and deciding to turn over instead of getting up, but I got about nine and a half hours' sleep. It was, however, disconcerting to hear myself saying, last night "I can stay up late!" and then notice that it was all of 10:30.

Today, I'm going to take it easy, to the extent that the football game (as presaged by marching band practice) across the street allows.

I was doing some proofreading a couple of days ago, stuff where they've dropped in bogus addresses for testing. In this case, one per state. So I got to the M's, and hit one with a probably made-up town in zip code 01002.

That zip code pulled up a visual memory of a country road, between the town of Amherst and the Hampshire College campus. I was driven down that road several times, and walked along a piece of it once or twice, in the summer of 1980. When I think of that summer, it's more likely to be the math, or the berry-picking (though the off-campus blackberry patch was along there, I can't recall whether it was down a side turning or on that road). There's more there than I've thought of in ages though, not just the stuff of anecdote, but running around barefoot under stars brighter than we get at home, and topology I've forgotten, and lots of Rubik's Cubes (just before they were a big thing). The view down into the Pioneer Valley, one Sunday when we went hiking on the low hills around the Connecticut River. The unfortunate smell of the pig farm, down the road a bit further if you went the other way instead of towards town.

When, three days later, you haven't gotten to opening all your birthday emails. (Okay, maybe if you got thousands, instead of a handful, that wouldn't be a sign of overwork.)
