I did sleep some last night--probably almost a full night's sleep--but it takes more than eight hours to make up for a sleepless night, and none of what I was upset about yesterday has changed. My friends are still there and still good, but it's going to take time.
Also, a co-worker--the same one who apologized yesterday for not-quite-taunting me over the election results (though she didn't use the word "taunt")--came up behind me this afternoon and pulled on my braid. She seemed genuinely surprised when I whirled around and said "Never do that again!!" Her first response was not an apology but "We're not doing well at the moment." [Unsaid: "You're not doing well: I'm minding my own business.] That more or less did for my concentration for the rest of the afternoon: I almost overlooked an entire missing paragraph from a sweepstakes rules slip (and caught it only because there was a second version that was built on the first, and I noticed that the second one was longer), though I did catch enough other errors that I hope I didn't actually let anything serious past. I only wish I'd thought to go over to Marvin and say "I'm not going to get this proofreading job done for Jamie this afternoon, because she just completely ruined my concentration." Instead, by the end of the afternoon I was muttering things like "I don't care if you work for Sirius Cybernetics, up is still a good direction" (at an envelope which was marked to have something moved up by 1/16 inch and instead had it moved down), and I ducked out in time for the 4:45 and 5:00 local train, getting me home about fifteen minutes earlier than usual.
And no, I did not get to the gym today.
If you need to talk to me this evening, please don't give up if the machine answers:
cattitude had to tell me twice that it's more effective to hang up on someone trying to sell me additional crap (from a phone company I deal with) than to repeatedly and harshly tell him that if he persists in doing so, I will find a different phone company.
