I went and talked to my supervisor today, to ask whether this now-six-months-old temp assignment is likely to turn into a permanent job. [Day-to-day, we don't see her, because she's in charge of a lot of other stuff: two of the three full-time proofreaders take care of assigning work.] She said it's very unlikely, because she doesn't have and probably can't get authorization for the headcount. She also told me that whoever is in charge of budgeting such things is unhappy with the amount being spent on temp proofreaders as well, and thus the temp assignment may not be available much longer. (Since Karen is forthright enough to make me look circumspect, I'm fairly sure that this is not an excuse for "we don't like your work enough.")
The reason for asking now is that
cattitude and I need to decide whether to renew our lease: we love Inwood, but if PCH were likely to offer permanence, it would make sense to move. So, take a day or two to let things settle mentally, and nudge the temp agency about finding me something in the city. (I have a doctor's appointment Wednesday, so won't be going out to the Island then, which might make it a more convenient day to make phone calls.) Karen also noted that if I need days off to interview for possible full-time jobs, just tell them and go.
